Moving & Packing Tips
Practical advice for packing smart, protecting your belongings, and loading your unit so everything fits and stays safe.
Pack Smart, Save Space
Use Uniform Box Sizes
Matching box sizes stack more securely and make better use of vertical space than mismatched containers.
Heavy on Bottom, Light on Top
Pack books and dense items in small boxes near the floor, and keep lightweight, fragile items up top.
Label Every Box
Write the room and a short contents list on each box. Number boxes and keep a matching inventory list.
Wrap Fragile Items Individually
Use packing paper or bubble wrap around dishes, glassware, and electronics, and fill empty space so nothing shifts.
Use Wardrobe Boxes for Clothing
Hanging wardrobe boxes keep clothes wrinkle-free and are faster to pack than folding everything.
Drain Fuel & Fluids from Equipment
Empty gas from mowers, trimmers, and other small engines before storing to avoid odors and fire risk.
Read Your Agreement
Review your rental agreement for termination and payment regulations before you move in. Make note of your payment due date and check that prorated rental periods are covered.
Know the Rules
Take a moment to get familiar with our facility rules and regulations.
Skip the Perishables
Never store perishable items in your unit, such as food or seeds.
Get the Most Out of Your Space
Don't lean stored property against the walls of your unit. Whenever possible, store boxes on wooden pallets or boards.
Don't stack boxes so high that getting to them becomes dangerous or overly time consuming.
Leave an aisle down the middle of your unit so boxes and other items can be easily seen and identified.
Make a complete list of all goods stored. Keep sales receipts, proofs of purchase, and warranties to prove ownership.
Take furniture apart to optimize space. Put bolts, screws, or parts in a plastic bag taped to the underside of table tops.
Chairs should be stacked seat to seat with paper or cloth between them. Use protective covers, and always use a high quality lock on your unit.
Terms Worth Knowing
Drive Up
A storage unit located so you can pull up to its door, just as if it was your own garage, making loading and unloading easy.
Roll Up Door vs. Swing Door
A swing door is similar to a walk-in closet. A roll up door opens like a garage door and helps you maximize the usage of your space.
Disc Lock
A lock with a round housing that covers most of the deadbolt, giving it the highest level of security. Available for purchase from us.
Office Hours vs. Gate Hours
Office hours are when a storage consultant is on-site to assist you. Gate hours determine the time frame in which you may access the facility.
Gate Coded Access
Your individually assigned gate code allows staff to monitor the entrance and exit of vehicles to the facility.
On-Site Manager
An employee has an apartment on the facility. Facilities with an on-site manager are generally safer and cleaner than those without one.
